How To Be A Good Teacher

A teacher is a person who has been trained to impart the knowledge, skills and values he/she has acquired through training to learners. What are the qualities of a good teacher? A good teacher should have the following qualities: 1. Be empathetic: a good teacher should be able to imagine what the learners might be thinking or how they feel. He/she should be able to sense the emotions of the learners. This would help to understand learners preparedness for the topic. And guide the teacher in choosing appropriate teaching method. 2. Be kind: kindness is an important character of anyone who wishes to become a teacher. A good teacher should be friendly with the learners, generous and considerate. This would endear the learners to him/her and make them more receptive to learn. 3. Be a good listener. A good teacher should encourage learners to express themselves. And also be interested to hear from them. Do not be autocratic. 4. Confidence in leadership. A good teacher should be confident an

Can one pass WASCE without cheating?

The above question has been asked by so many young people. With a smile on my face, I say yes to that. First, let us understand what we are talking about. Most Nigerians refer to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) as the actual exam. This is a misconception. WAEC is the examining body and not the examination. West Africa School Certificate Exam (WASCE) is the exam conducted by WAEC. It is expected that candidates who take WASCE have successfully completed the syllabus and are now ready to be tested. So, to pass WASCE without cheating, you have to successfully complete the syllabus. Some people might say it's impossible! Well over time, the history of the human race has shown that impossibility can only exist when people have not made up their minds to achieve an objective. Same goes for this exam. I will not forget what one of my secondary school teachers shared with us many years ago. He said his elder brother brought him from the village to the city. He couldn't att

Sahara Reporters Published That Imo Public Schools Charge Students N2,000 Per Subject To Allow Cheating During WAEC Exam

According to the news published by Sahara Reporters yesterday, some public secondary schools in Imo State are reportedly charging students N2,000 per subject to provide them with answers to questions in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination. The school owners met with students before the commencement of the examination where they informed them that they would provide the answers if each student paid N2,000 per subject.  A relative of the students, who spoke with our correspondent, said the schools claimed that majority of the students might fail because of the Coronavirus lockdown and unpreparedness for the examination. The relative also said the school claimed that the money would be given to each invigilator monitoring the examination. “The school management held meetings with their students and it was agreed they pay the N2,000 to settle WAEC invigilators to give them way for exam cheats. “School principals in public secondary schools in Imo State are chargi

Does education really pay?

Young people are often faced with different challenges. One of which is questioning the value of education. They sometimes ask themselves if they are on the right educational or career path to financial freedom. Due to societal pressure, they are often confused about their choices. Especially, their decision to enroll into an institution of learning inorder to acquire formal education. Education is the process or art of imparting knowledge, skill, idea, value and judgement. It can be formal, informal or semi-formal. By formal education, I mean that standardized system of teaching and learning that take place in schools. By Informal education, I mean those forms of learning and skill acquisition that take place at home or playground. By semi-formal education, I mean those other forms of instruction that take place outside the school setting like tutorials. Education is valuable. Some may ask, how? Let me lead you. A person who is not educated and literate cannot read and write. Such a p

The Lion and the Jewel by Wole Soyinka: The use of dramatic techniques

Woke Soyinka employed different dramatic techniques in his play, "The Lion and the Jewel" to create this beautiful piece we have. One of them is the use of mime during the "Dance of the Lost Traveller", which portrays the sudden arrival of a photographer in the village of Ilujinle some time ago. Lakunle is made to play the lost stranger while four village girls kneel on the ground to form the wheels of a car. Lakunle adjusts their position and sits in air in the middle. He pretends to drive the car.The girls shudder, and drop their faces on their laps. He pretends to try to restart the car. He gets out and checks the wheels of the car, and pinches them. He tries to start the car, fails and takes his things for a trek. He hears a girl giggling, but not understanding the sound, he throws the bottle that he was drinking from in that direction. This makes Sidi scream and respond with a torrent of abuse. Startled, the stranger takes a closer look and sees Sidi
