VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT: WORDS ASSOCIATED WITH SPORTS

To understand words associated with sports in general, we are going to consider the following:

1. Names of major national games (in Nigeria) : football, handball, polio, netball, cricket, hockey, wrestling, boxing, athletics, volleyball, basketball, weight lifting, shot-put, table tennis, lawn tennis, swimming, gulf, karate e.t.c

2. Words for sporting activities: tournament, contest, championship, head bout, round, extra time, half time, semifinal, quarterfinal, finals, group stage, chairman cup, friendly match, relay race, final bout e.t.c

3. Venues of sports: stadium, arena, swimming pool, lakes, boxing ring, football field, race course, track lane, tennis court, yard e.t.c

4. Sports officials: umpire, coach, referee, linemen, games master, sparring partner, sports fans, spectators e.t.c

5. Games results: winning side, losers, drawn match, stalemate, gold medalist, silver medalist, bronze medalist, Olympic champion, Victor e.t.c

6. Games performance : an exciting match, a brilliant performance, an uphill task, a lousy performance, a terrible performance, a hat trick e.t.c

MEANING OF SOME SPORTS VOCABULARY

1. Football: a game played by two teams of 11 players, using a round ball which players kick up and down the playing field.

2. Athletics: a sport that people compete in that involves running, jumping and throwing.

3. Cricket: a game played on grass by two teams of 11 players. Players score points ( called runs ) by hitting the ball with a wooden bat and running between two sets of upright wooden sticks called stumps.

4. Championship: a competition to find the best player or team in a particular sport.

5. Contest: a competition in which people try to win something.

6. Round: a stage in a sports competition like boxing or wrestling match.

7. Racecourse: a track where horses race and the buildings e.t.c. that are connected to it.

8. Racetrack: a track for races between runners, cars, bicycles e.t.c

9. Track: a piece of ground with a special surface for people, cars e.t.c to have races on.

10. Umpire: a person whose job is to watch a game and make sure that rules are not broken like in tennis and baseball.

11. Linesmen: officials who help the referee in deciding whether or where a ball crosses one of the lines especially in football games.

12. Sports Fan: a person who admires a sport or enjoys watching or listening to a sports very much.

13. Supporter: a person who supports a particular sports team.

                                           SENTENCES

1. That was a brilliant match.

2. The visiting team performed terribly.

3. We are looking forward to the Olympic games.

4. Ours is the winning side.

5. The coach did a good job with his team.
